Our accreditations show our team is competent and follows all safety and compliance rules to ensure you are left protected.

Understanding Passive Fire Protection

Fire protection systems fall into two categories: active fire protection systems and passive fire protection systems.

Active fire protection includes fire alarms, fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, fire hoses, automatic vents and systems that potentially suppress fire using water, inert gases or other fire control methods. These active systems rely on activation, detection or human intervention.

Passive fire protection, by contrast, is built into the building structure. Passive fire protection methods are designed to prevent fire and the spread of fire by containing heat and smoke within defined compartments. This limits structural damage, protects structural elements such as structural steel and ensures escape routes remain usable for as long as possible.

Both active and passive fire protection are an integral part of any effective fire strategy and fire risk assessment.

Containing Fire. Protecting Lives.

Passive fire protection forms the backbone of a building’s fire safety strategy. When correctly installed and maintained, it prevents the spread of fire and smoke through compartments, protecting escape routes and reducing risk to occupants. Masterfix Maintain ensures systems perform as designed—identifying defects early and delivering compliant remediation works that stand up to scrutiny.

Confidence for Duty Holders

Fire safety responsibilities are complex and heavily scrutinised. Our structured approach provides clarity and assurance to duty holders, with detailed inspections, photographic evidence, and clear recommendations. FIRAS certification ensures all works are independently verified, reducing risk, liability, and uncertainty.

The Difference Between Active and Passive Fire Protection Services

Passive fire protection (PFP) systems are built into the structure of a building and are always active. These include fire walls, fire resistant doors, cavity barriers, fire stopping, smoke dampers, and fire resistant materials. Passive fire protection services also cover fire resistant coatings, such as intumescent coating and intumescent fireproofing, which protect structural steel and maintain fire resistance. When correctly installed, passive fire protection systems help preserve the building’s structural integrity and protect escape routes.

Active fire protection systems respond to fire through detection, warning, or suppression. These active systems include fire alarm systems, fire alarms, smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, inert gases, automatic vents, and emergency escape lighting. Active fire protection often requires power, water, or human intervention and must be supported by regular testing and ongoing maintenance.
